Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE)
The Human Society and Its Environment or HSIE Department teaches a wide range of courses. The study of HSIE focuses on developing inquiry learning skills as they engage with people, places and issues. This allows Trinity College students to explore the diversity of human society and the environment as well as origins, developments, consequences and possibilities for the future. Trinity College students conduct fieldwork and site studies including visits to the Australian War Memorial and the National Zoo as part of their studies. Through analysing information and values, students can make responsible decisions about social, cultural, economic, religious, civic and environmental issues that may affect them now or in the future.
Students in years 7 to 10 study History and Geography as well as having the option to select Commerce in years 9 and 10 as an elective subject. Studies in History cover a wide range of topics from the Ancient to the Modern time period. Studies in Geography allow students to apply their understanding of the natural and human environment to real world problems such as creating sustainable biomes or the management of natural hazards. Commerce students study a wide range of highly relevant topics and develop an understanding of legal and financial issues as well as gaining useful real world skills.
In Years 11 and 12 students may elect to study from a wide range of HSIE subjects including Business Studies, Legal Studies, Modern History, Ancient History, Society and Culture and Extension History. These subjects allow students to develop skills in critical thinking, high level research, and analysis that assist students in preparing for their future.
